Imagine typing "how much did I actually make last quarter, after payroll and the new equipment lease?" into a chat window and getting a real answer — pulled from your actual books, not a guess based on a spreadsheet you uploaded three weeks ago. Here's what actually launched, how it works, what it can and can't do, and the questions worth asking before you plug your financial data into it.
What Xero and Anthropic Actually Announced
The integration didn't appear overnight. Xero and Anthropic announced a multi-year partnership in late March 2026, then shipped the first live version about six weeks later. It's bidirectional, which is the part worth paying attention to:
- Claude inside Xero. Xero's existing AI assistant, JAX ("Just Ask Xero"), is now powered by Claude's reasoning under the hood. Accountants seem to be landing on a pragmatic middle ground rather than either extreme. Say you run a 12-person landscaping company and it's the Monday after a slow-pay client finally settled a $9,000 invoice. - What's the training-data policy, in writing? "Session-only, not used for training" is the claim here — confirm it's in the actual terms you're agreeing to, not just a press release.
- Can you scope the connection? Check whether you can limit access to specific data entities (say, reports and invoices, but not payroll) rather than an all-or-nothing grant.
- Is it revocable in one click? OAuth connections should be easy to see and disconnect from your account settings — if you can't find that screen in under a minute, that's a red flag.
- Who signs off on anything that moves money? Treat AI-generated answers as a draft or a first pass — a summary of overdue invoices to review, not an instruction to pay them — the same way you'd treat a junior bookkeeper's first-day work.
- What's your fallback if the assistant is wrong? You should always be able to open the underlying report yourself and check the number by hand. If the only way to verify an AI's answer is to ask a different AI, you've lost your audit trail.
None of this is a reason to avoid the feature — it's the same due diligence you'd apply before connecting any third-party app to your bank account.
This Isn't Happening in Isolation
Xero isn't the only platform racing here. Competing accounting software has been rolling out its own agentic AI features — automated payroll processing and sales tax filing agents among them — over the same stretch of 2026, and the broader small-business software market is clearly converging on the same idea: your financial data should be answerable in natural language, from wherever you're already working, without a manual export step.
That's a genuinely useful direction. It's also worth noticing what it requires to get there: a proprietary connector, an OAuth grant, a vendor-specific "trust us" on training data, and — in every case — data that lives inside someone else's platform, in a format you can't directly read yourself. Every one of those pieces is a dependency: if the vendor changes the API, deprecates the integration, or gets acquired, the connection between your data and your AI tool of choice can disappear with it.
A Different Way to Get There
There's a version of "ask an AI about my books" that doesn't require any of that plumbing: keep your books in plain text to begin with.
