They track it against current market value, because that's the only number that tells you anything useful about what's actually on the ground. That real-time discipline matters more here than in almost any other small business, because "what's it worth" isn't a static question — it's a question with a different answer every day the commodity index moves.
A Practical Structure: Separate the Streams, Then Reconcile Weight
You don't need enterprise recycling software to get this right on a small scale — you need an account structure that respects the fact that one purchase produces multiple divergent outputs. A few practices that hold up:
1. Split parts inventory from commodity/scrap inventory at the account level. Don't lump "vehicle inventory" into one bucket. A part waiting for a buyer behaves like retail inventory (held at cost until sold). Bulk scrap behaves like a commodity (marked toward current market price). Mixing them means neither number is trustworthy.
2. Allocate the purchase cost at intake, not at sale. When a vehicle or a load of mixed scrap comes in, make a reasonable estimated split — say, X% to parts, Y% to scrap weight — based on condition and known demand, rather than waiting until everything sells to figure out retroactively what the "real" cost basis was. It won't be perfect, but a documented, consistent allocation rule beats no rule, and it's what lets you compute margin on the parts business separately from the scrap business.
3. Track by grade and weight class, not just by "item." Whether it's a car part or a load of insulated copper wire, the sellable unit is defined by its processed grade, not its original purchase description. Your records should follow material through reclassification — bought as mixed non-ferrous, sold as three separate graded lots — rather than trying to keep a single unchanging line item alive across that transformation.
4. Reconcile against scale tickets, weekly at minimum. The scale is your source of truth for weight-based inventory. If your books don't tie back to actual scale tickets on a tight cadence, drift compounds fast in a business where prices move daily and volume is high.
5. Revalue commodity inventory to market periodically, and say so consistently. Whatever cadence you pick — weekly, at each closing snapshot — apply it consistently so your margin trends are comparable period to period, instead of being an artifact of when you happened to check prices.

It's the sum of several different bets — will this part find a buyer, will this commodity grade hold its price long enough to process and move it — made simultaneously on every single vehicle or load that comes through the gate.
Yards that track this well don't necessarily have fancier software than everyone else.
